Past Projects Page 2
Here is a recent restoration project, a Victorian sofa we totally restored.
We don't normally get into upholstering sofas (especially velvet), but this one belongs to a very
good repeat customer so I made an exception.
Below left: This sofa was in pretty average condition, in need of as much work on the interior as it
did on the exterior.
Below right: After stripping all the old fabric, tacks and webbing, we re-glued the legs, added new
corner blocks, retied the springs and installed new webbing.
Below left: Many, many hours go into the interior of a project like this, and you never even see it!
Below right, We re-glued the loose frame, repaired a few areas and then glazed the original
finish to a darker color.
Below: After finishing, we were ready to start upholstery.
Below: The finished product!
This week's update was a shop project we were calling Restoration CSI .
Mainly because it looked like a crime scene. This one was just a tad bit challenging.
The assignment involved restoring a gilded frame that had fallen off the wall.
Below left: This was the corner that sustained the most damage. The entire frame was badly damaged,
and there were no carved sections that had not sustained some degree of damage.
Below right: The pieces recovered at the scene.
As it turned out, about 1/4 of the pieces were missing completely, and had to be carved.
Below: The frame after the completed restoration. All of the pieces above were carefully re-glued back
in place. The missing parts were then carved in place and all the damaged areas were gilded
to match the original look of the frame.
We stripped off the paint, refinished, cleaned the hardware and replaced the recalled lock with
the new Lane safety lock.
Beidermeier style dining table
This table was made in US occupied Germany, and I really wanted to save it.
My big concern was the polyester finish someone applied during the life
of this table. It had severely cracked along with the veneer. In the past, Polyester
had been nearly impossible to strip. My suspicions were correct, and nothing I tried
would strip the finish. Just as we were ready to throw in the towel, I spoke with
Benny of Benco Supplies and he sent me a product he said would strip polyester finish.
It worked great and I was able to remove the finish, repair the veneer and
give this great German made table a new life.

Above...It was not looking good and I had my doubts I could help this table

Fortunately, we were able to restore this table back to the way it was meant to look.
